When it's 110° outside, warm air from the vents is an emergency, especially with kids, seniors or pets at home. Here are the safe checks to try first, the most common causes we find in Las Vegas, and when to call us.
5 safe checks (about 5 minutes)
- Thermostat: set to COOL (not FAN or AUTO-heat), a few degrees below room temperature. Replace the batteries if it has them.
- Wait about 5 minutes. Many systems have a short start delay.
- Air filter: a clogged filter can freeze the coil and choke airflow. Replace it if it's dirty.
- Breakers: check the AC and furnace/air handler breakers in your panel. If one trips again, stop and call us.
- Outdoor unit: is the fan spinning? Clear anything blocking it. Look for water in the indoor drain pan; a full pan can shut the system off.
Please don't open electrical panels on the unit or add refrigerant yourself.
Common causes we find
- Failed capacitor or contactor, very common in Vegas heat; the outdoor unit hums or won't start.
- Outdoor fan motor failure, so the system overheats.
- Low refrigerant from a leak.
- Frozen evaporator coil, often from a dirty filter or airflow problem. Turn the AC off and run FAN to thaw it, then call.
- Dirty condenser coil, from desert dust.
- Drain line clog tripping the safety switch.
Why not to wait
A weak part left running in desert heat can damage the compressor, a much bigger repair. Turning the system off and calling early usually costs less.
What it costs to have us look
Standard-hours service call: $69. For example, the estimated cost to replace a single run capacitor is about $251 and a contactor about $466, both including the $69 service call (see the full list of estimates). Prices shown are estimates for typical jobs and include a $69 service call (the $69 service call isn't credited toward the repair). Your actual price depends on your system and the exact parts needed, and your technician gives you an exact upfront price before any work begins. After hours: $179 (non-members). Your technician gives you an upfront price before any work. See AC repair costs.
